FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — As the Fresno Unified School District navigates a budget deficit, classified employees are voicing their concerns about possible layoffs to their essential workforce.

At Wednesday’s board meeting, Fresno Unified custodians, bus drivers and food service workers called on district leaders to reconsider proposed job layoffs and wage freezes.

They say these budget decisions will hurt departments that are already stretched thin, ultimately hurting the students.

“I take pride in the work I do because I know that it’s important for the health and wellbeing for our students and directly impacts the outcomes,” Fresno High School custodian Luiz Munoz said.

At least 30 teacher positions are also at risk.

This comes as the union negotiates its next three-year contract with the district.

Their last contract expired in June.

Layoff notices are due by March 15, but budget hearings are set to go on for the next couple of months.
