Interstate 80 crash, vehicle fire, causes heavy traffic in Sacramento County area
IT. WE HAVE MELANIE WINGO WITH MORE DETAILS. I’D LIKE TO BRING HER IN NOW. MELANIE. WE’RE ON THE WESTBOUND SIDE OF INTERSTATE 80. AND AS YOU LOOK IN THIS DIRECTION, YOU’RE SEEING CARS THAT ARE MAKING THEIR WAY ON INTO SACRAMENTO. BUT HERE’S A TIP AS TO HOW MUCH THAT CAR FIRE AND CRASH ON I-80 IN THE WESTBOUND LANES IS CAUSING A BACKUP. WE’RE RIGHT NEAR ROSEVILLE, SORT OF ON THE LINE OF ROSEVILLE AND CITRUS HEIGHTS, AND THE TRAFFIC FROM THAT CRASH IS CAUSING A BACKUP ALL THE WAY IN TO THE ROSEVILLE AREA AND BEYOND. SO IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THIS VIDEO THAT WE CAPTURED JUST ABOUT A HALF HOUR AGO, WE WERE, AS AARON MENTIONED, DRIVING A LIVE TRACKER THREE, AND WE SAW A CAR THAT WAS ON FIRE. IT WAS STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WESTBOUND LANES. THERE WAS ANOTHER CAR OFF INTO A DITCH, AND THEN WE JUST SAW THAT CAR FIRE GO FROM BAD TO WORSE. THOSE FLAMES LEAPING INTO THE AIR BEFORE FIRE CREWS MANAGED TO GET ON SCENE. AND THEN ONCE FIRE CREWS GOT THERE, SAC METRO MADE QUICK WORK OF THINGS, PUT OUT THE FIRE, BUT STILL, THERE WAS A LOT OF FIGURING OUT OF HOW THAT CRASH HAPPENED TO DEAL WITH. CHP WAS ON THE SCENE AS WELL. IT DIDN’T APPEAR THAT ANYBODY FROM THE SECOND VEHICLE WAS INJURED. I DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE FIRST VEHICLE. WE’RE STILL WAITING TO HEAR FROM CHP ABOUT ANY POSSIBLE INJURIES, ESPECIALLY WITH THAT CAR THAT ENDED UP CATCHING ON FIRE. BUT YEAH, THE BACKUP THIS MORNING PRETTY INTENSE. AND IF YOU PAN THIS WAY, MY PHOTOGRAPHER IS GOING TO SHOW YOU THESE CARS HEADED IN THIS DIRECTION HERE WESTBOUND. WE’RE JUST APPROACHING ANTELOPE ROAD. Interstate 80 traffic in Sacramento County is heavily congested after a crash that resulted in a car catching fire Thursday morning.Traffic logs from the California Highway Patrol show the crash on the freeway just west of Greenback Lane in the Foothill Farms area of Sacramento County was reported around 7:35 a.m.Road officials issued a SigAlert, which indicates that extended closures or delays are expected. It appears that the SigAlert was canceled at 8:19 a.m., but traffic maps show traffic backup as far north as Roseville as of 8:25 a.m.Video from the scene showed a vehicle engulfed in flames.KCRA 3 is working to gather details on what led to the crash, how many vehicles were involved and if there are any injuries.
