The former Rite Aid at Oakland Drive and Centre Avenue in Portage is preparing to reopen as the area’s newest Dollar Tree.

While there are countless Dollar Tree locations already open in our area, many residents are still eagerly anticipating the convenience of the newly rebuilt corner store.

While the May 2024 tornadoes may have severely damaged the neighboring shopping plaza, the building at 1950 W Centre Ave. in Portage remained relatively unscathed. However, according to MLive the former Rite Aid store closed in 2024 as a result of the company’s bankruptcy filing.

I was so glad when I first heard the popular dollar store chain would be filling the space meaning we wouldn’t be stuck with yet another empty retail store to stare at. Actually, I’m really excited at all the new businesses that are taking advantage of existing retail space, such as PickleRage, which will open indoor pickleball courts inside the former D&W on Romence Road and Zap Zone XL, opening soon inside the former Sears at the Crossroads Mall.

According to local Facebook group, Nosey Asses of Kalamazoo County (who else?), Southwest Michigan’s newest Dollar Tree is eyeing its grand opening. While one report says the store could open as soon as February 12, a commenter who is allegedly working at the store says that date is still tentative.

Either way, all signs point to– soon!

I’m actually a big fan of Dollar Tree, and an even bigger fan of this new location being just down the road from me. Just make sure you’re double-checking that the price on the shelf matches the price at the register!
