LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Jordan girls basketball team used its explosive offense and tough defense to pull away late from Roosevelt for a 47-32 victory Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs at Browning High School.

It was a close contest for three quarters as both teams struggled to score. But it was the Panthers (20-8) who found a way to extend their lead in the fourth quarter.

In the final period Jordan reminded Roosevelt (12-20) why it is the No. 1 seed in the Division 4 bracket.

The Panthers opened the fourth quarter with a 13-2 run in the first five minutes of the period. They outscored the Mustangs 21-7 in the final quarter, using a balanced effort on offense as well as tightening up their defense.

Panthers head coach Wesley Rosenbaum noted the changes his team made in the fourth quarter.

“We knew our defense was going to hold its ground, we just needed to play a little more under control and stay composed,” said Rosenbaum. “We wanted to push the ball, we needed better spacing, be a little more steady. But ultimately, it’s put the ball in the players’ hands that we know that can make things happen.”

One of those players for Jordan was senior guard Janiah Lorn, who scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the second half. She had eight points in the fourth and added six rebounds.

Lorn said he coaches encouraged her to be more aggressive on offense.

“My coaches kept telling me that I wasn’t shooting enough,” said Lorn. “I kept looking to pass too much. I’m a senior this year, so I have to go all in and empty my tank. I did agree with them; I was not shooting enough.”

“My mentality coming into the second half (was), I got to shoot more, I have to be more selfish,’ ” Lorn added. “I got to look for my shot more, and that’s what I did. I kept getting to the rim and finished with 18 points.”

Rosenbaum heaped praise on Lorn for her game prep.

“It’s just a testament to her preparation,” said Rosenbaum. “She’s just so locked in…the film study, the reps before, the time before, and she’s just a gamer. She’s never going to quit. She works as hard as anyone I’ve ever seen, and I just trust her with everything. So she came through for us big time.”

Jordan also got key contributions from other players.

Senior forward Jah’asharee Moore filled up the stat sheet with nine points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four blocks. Junior guard Harmony Isaac scored eight points with five steals and three rebounds, and freshman center Mila Hunt added eight points and nine rebounds.

Junior forward Keira Vindel did not score but made an impact with 14 rebounds and two blocks.

Roosevelt played hard the entire game on both ends of the floor, consistently putting tough defensive pressure on the Panthers and kept the game close.

Roosevelt took a 17-16 lead briefly in the third quarter, as freshman guard Kristen Ly got hot offensively. She scored nine of her team-high 16 points in the third.

She also had six rebounds two assists in the game. She also knocked down two 3-pointers before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Madisyn Smith added nine points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench for the Mustangs.
