(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Police Department is continuing its investigation into the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy.

Officers arrived at the 3300 block of Douglas St. around 12:30 p.m. Thursday for a medical aid call. They said they first found the child with serious injuries.

“Despite life-saving measures, that boy was pronounced deceased on scene by fire personnel,” Allison Smith, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department, said.

Police said the investigation is just beginning.

“Currently, this is a suspicious death investigation and the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after next of kin have been notified,” Smith said.

FOX40 asked Smith about the nature of the child’s fatal injuries.

“Right now, I just have preliminary information,” Smith said. “They were serious injuries in nature and enough to unfortunately cause them to pass away on scene.”

Officials also could not confirm whether or not any weapons were found at the scene.

“We can tell you we’ve been in contact with the family members,” Smith said. “I don’t know specifically who was at home with the boy when this all occurred, but someone appeared to be at home and they contacted the fire department.”

Police said the scene appears to be contained, which means they do not believe there is any imminent threat to the public.

“This is a tragic incident,” Smith said. “Any time a child dies, it’s difficult — unimaginably difficult for the family and everybody who responded to the scene … first responders, family members, loved ones.”

One neighbor, T. Henderson, has lived in the area for about ten years. She said this is the first time she’s seen something like this happen there.

“It almost makes me want to cry,” Henderson said. “I’m still really in shock that this is actually happening this close to home.”
