Two cash-strapped San Jose school districts are grappling with cuts and possible consolidations.

On Thursday, the East Side Union High School board met to address a $20 million deficit. Last month, the district approved a proposal to cut more than $6 million.

The teachers union is urging the district to reduce management positions instead of cutting school-based staff.

Meanwhile, parents Thursday night rallied outside a meeting of the Alum Rock Union School District.

Board members weighed a merger next fall, bringing students from two “Adelante” schools to Clyde Fisher School, which currently sits vacant after a closure last year.

Parents are asking for the district to hold off on the merger until renovations can be made.
