LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The West Kentucky Street corridor between S. 5th and S. 8th streets has been converted from a one-way street to a two-way street. The city said this was done to slow down traffic and make the area safer for people who walk and bike to businesses, homes and school.
Along with the street makeover, sidewalks have also been improved for better walkability.
“It means improving our sidewalks and our alleys and building roads that protect our drivers, our pedestrians, our cyclists, that improve the quality of neighborhoods and retail, so we have neighborhoods where people can thrive and enjoy themselves, communities that people stop in and don’t just speed through,” said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg.
Rev. Dr. Kevin Cosby, president of Simmons College, said work like this puts Louisville HBCUs on the map to compete with other schools across the country.
“If we want to really improve our city in its totality, especially parts of our city that has been neglected and omitted, then we must build roads,” Cosby said.
The final touch will be planting trees that will soon become a tree canopy that provides more shade to the neighborhood.
