Sacramento-area businesses prepare for Valentine’s Day rush

Sacramento-area businesses are preparing for the Valentine’s Day rush, with florists and sweet shops extending hours and offering special treats to meet the demand.Kayleen Ortega from Icing on the Cupcake said, “Today we received a lot, we received like 300 — maybe more.” The shop is getting creative in the kitchen, rolling out festive flavors and special designs. “For the holidays, we usually tend to decorate it for Valentine’s. We have red, pink, basically everything: Valentine’s, love,” Ortega said.Customers are also gearing up for the holiday. “I like to just hang out with my girlfriend, just kick it with her,” Allen Garcia said. “We like to watch movies, eat chocolates, and stuff like that.” Mike Walsh, another customer, said, “I’m limited by my son’s palette, so he’s going to get a confetti one, but I’ll probably grab a red velvet, or if there’s something special, I’ll take a look before I order.”For those who tend to procrastinate, businesses are extending their hours and keeping grab-and-go options ready. “This afternoon, we’ll get another rush before closing or people leaving work and stuff,” said Jim Relles from Relles Florist.Florists have been prepping for days, placing bulk orders, trimming stems, and building arrangements to keep up with the surge in demand.”We brought in about eight extra vehicles, so we have around 13… so then we have to hire extra drivers and extra staff to come in and help, so the logistics are pretty interesting for Valentine’s Day,” Relles said.Roses remain the classic favorite, but florists say customers are also mixing it up this year with colorful bouquets and custom arrangements to make their gifts more personal. “We made up about six Relles specials just for Valentine’s Day, but the number one seller is still red roses… we’re trying to educate them,” Relles said.For last-minute shoppers, many shops are stocked with ready-to-go bouquets and are even extending hours to ensure no one goes home empty-handed. Local street vendors are also selling, encouraging support for local businesses.
