In the first matchup of a three-game series against the Fresno State Bulldogs, the Washington Huskies didn’t need much more than two of their brightest stars, first baseman Alexis DeBoer and pitcher Sophia Ramuno, in a 2-0 win.

At the plate, the Preseason Second Team All-American gave the Huskies a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a solo shot to right field, her fourth of the season. Then, in the seventh, she drove in her second run of the game with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Marley Teasley to cap off a 2-for-2 day where she reached base four times on a pair of walks.

Offensively, the Huskies couldn’t get much else going against Bulldogs starter Lauryn Carranco, who limited coach Heather Tarr’s team to just 6 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts over 7 innings on her way to her first loss of the season as she dropped to 2-1.

Jade Bubke, Allie Thomsen, Sophi Mazzolla, and Zuri Patterson collected the other four hits for the Huskies, two of which came in the first inning following DeBoer’s homer. In a game that lacked extra-base hits, Thomsen’s double in the seventh to set up DeBoer’s RBI single was the only other extra-base hit in the contest, as Ramuno silenced the Bulldogs’ bats.

After leading the Huskies in earned run average last season, Ramuno has gotten off to a strong start in her senior season. The former Cal Poly transfer threw her first complete game shutout of the season, letting up just 5 hits over 7 innings of work with 8 strikeouts as she improved to 2-0 on the year.
