Last time out: With leading scorer Ty-Laur Johnson off the team, USD made several changes and beat visiting Portland 71-58 on Wednesday. Guard Emmanuel Callas moved into the starting lineup and drew praise from coach Steve Lavin for his defense. Starting guard Juanse Gorosito (5-for-8 on three-point shots) and reserve Toneari Lane (4-for-5) led USD with 19 and 14 points, respectively.  After a spotty first half, USD outscored the Pilots 44-27 after intermission. With 6-9 junior Assane Diop (seven rebounds) and 6-7 freshman Gavin Ripp (five) leading the way, USD had a rare 30-28 edge in rebounds.

Toreros update: After Thursday’s win, Lavin said adjustments are still forthcoming for USD following the departure of Johnson, who will be entering the transfer portal for a third straight season. Johnson led USD in scoring (14.6 points a game), assists (100) and steals (52). USD is still a guard-led offense with Lane (10.6 points a game), Gorosito (10.3) and Adrian McIntyre (9.6) the leading scorers.

Dons update: USF won the first meeting between the teams 74-64 in San Francisco on Jan. 2. But the Dons are 4-7 since that game and have lost three straight and five of the last six.
