A fire broke out early Friday morning at a two-story home in Fresno that resulted in an arson arrest.

The fire took place just before 4 a.m. at a two-story home on the 3500 block of North Vernal Avenue.

Fire crews encountered heavy smoke and flames visible from the home. Fire spokesperson Josh Sellers said responders were told that someone might still be inside the home, triggering a two-alarm fire. Thirty-seven personnel responded to battle the blaze.

Crews conducted a search amid intense conditions, and authorities later confirmed that no one was trapped inside.

Two people were at home at the time of the fire and were able to get out safely, Sellers said.

Despite firefighters’ efforts, the home sustained extensive damage.

Sellers said three adults who reside at the home have been displaced. One dog died in the fire. One firefighter suffered injuries and was treated.

Fire investigators determined the blaze was intentionally set. One of the occupants of the home was arrested on suspicion of arson.

The investigation remains ongoing.
