FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — It was quite a busy Valentine’s Day for Fresno State Athletics.
On the baseball diamond, Clovis West HS grad Tyler Patrick made his debut in the weekend rotation. The sophomore right-hander pitched primarily out of the bullpen as a freshman, although he did make six starts in midweek games last year.
His start on Saturday lasted until the 5th inning. Utah tagged him for four runs in the 2nd inning, all of them with two outs.
The Diamond ‘Dogs nearly rallied all the way back, thanks to RBI hits from freshman Marcus Nolen (Central East HS) and grad transfer Austin Young (Buchanan).
But the Utes still won, 5-4. The series continues Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
Across the street, the No. 24-ranked Washington softball team completed a sweep of Fresno State, 6-1. Clovis North grad Ryan Maddox pitched the final inning to seal the Huskies’ win.
At the Save Mart Center, the Fresno State men’s basketball team started hot and never let up on Air Force.
The Falcons’ losing streak extended to 18 games as the Bulldogs cruised, 93-63. DeShawn Gory led the team with 18 points, and Wilson Jacques, Zaon Collins and Bastien Rieber also scored in double-figures.
Head coach Vance Walberg confirmed after the game that D.J. Douglas (knee) will miss the rest of the year, and Jake Heidbreder (back spasms) is doubtful to play Tuesday at Wyoming.
