IRVINE, Calif. – No. 13 Fresno State led No. 7 Long Beach State wire-to-wire to secure a 13-6 win on day two of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational hosted by UC Irvine.
Fresno State (8-6) opened a 4-1 lead despite a beautiful bar-in by freshman Angeliki Arroyo. Long Beach State (7-7) fought back at the end of the quarter to cut the margin to 4-3 after goals from Daniela Quinzada and Brooklyn Plomp.
A strong start by the Beach early in the second quarter tied the game as Elyana Goren added her first of the day. The Bulldogs answered with a five-goal run to extend the lead, 9-4. Goren added another, but LBSU trailed 9-5 at halftime.
The second half started with Fresno State in control once again, scoring two goals to open an 11-5 lead with 6:02 left in the third. Jermonie Billingsly got one past the Bulldogs’ defense, but another goal by Fresno State closed the third period, 12-6.
In the final period, the Beach created several opportunities but was stopped by Katelyn Mobley, who led the Bulldogs with 13 saves and secured a 13-6 win over Long Beach State.
The Beach will now face No. 12 UC Irvine in the seventh-place game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Anteater Aquatics Complex, with live stats provided through TheFOSH.net.
