(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Police Department released an eight-minute-long video, compiled by the police department, detailing the moments leading up to a deadly officer-involved shooting from Jan. 29. Two Sacramento police officers fired shots at a bank robbery suspect and later learned he did not have a real weapon.

The Sacramento Police Department clarified at the beginning of the video that the footage can only provide a limited perspective of this complex incident. It includes police body camera footage and dash-camera video from both bystanders and officers. It’s clear a core part of the footage is the second before the shooting when police call out that the suspect had a gun. Officials later learned it was a fake weapon, so this is all still under investigation. But for now, FOX40 is walking you through the footage.

“Get on the ground now! Get on the ground! Look at his hand,” Officers called out. “Shots fired, one down.”

A person called 911 and said a white man who looked to be in his 30’s or 40’s with tattoos, took money from a bank teller, then took off down Response Rd. in Sacramento.

“He was wearing a blue long sleeve and I saw him in a green jacket and I saw some backpack, black. He is walking toward the direction of the fire station,” the caller said.

The call continued.

“Did you see any weapons on him at all?” the dispatcher asked. “No could not tell,” the caller replied.

Later, officers arrived at the site along the 1600 block of Response Road, where they spoke with witnesses.

“Did he have any weapons?” an officer asked. “He claimed he had a gun,” a witness replied. “He had his hand in his backpack So just not to give him a big deal. That he’d shoot us up.”

Therefore, according to the video compilation, at this point, the caller said he did not believe the man had a weapon, but that he couldn’t tell. Meanwhile, witnesses said the suspect claimed to have a gun and threatened them with it.

Next, footage showed officers finding the man on foot.

“Officers pursued the suspect and gave the suspect multiple commands to drop the firearm,” a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department narrated during the video. “The suspect did not drop the firearm. The suspect pointed the firearm at the officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

This police-compiled footage then freezes the screen and they inserted a red circle to highlight the suspect’s stance immediately prior to the shooting. The frozen shot shows his arm extended. This is where you can hear officers saying out loud that they think he is armed.

The video also showed a second police car’s perspective.

“Copy, he has a gun,” an officer in a car facing the street said out loud. “Shots fired, one.”

Graphic footage, which FOX40 did not include in our segment as it could be difficult for viewers to see, showed officers attempting life-saving measures on the suspect after the shooting. The suspect died at the scene. Officers later discovered he was not actually armed with a real gun.

“Officers recovered what was later determined to be an imitation firearm on scene,” a Sacramento Police Department official narrated in the released video compilation.

According to officials, this incident falls under Sacramento City Council’s policy on police use of force as well as Senate Bill 1421. This means all related video and audio must be released to the public within 30 days.

Dan Wiseman, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department, said to keep in mind that camera footage is limited.

“This narrated video is intended to provide context to the incident,” Wiseman had shared at the beginning of the video. “Our department is committed to transparency.”

The Sacramento Police Department’s Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Division and Professional Standards Unit are investigating this incident. The Force Investigation Team is also investigating and the Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office are providing oversight.
