University of San Francisco shot 68% from the field and added 22 free throws while scoring 56 points in the second half Sunday afternoon to down University of San Diego 92-79 in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The Toreros led 41-36 at halftime, but San Francisco opened the second half with a 12-0 run. USD fell to 11-17 and 5-10 after losing the season series to the Dons (15-13, 7-8).
Starting guards Toneari Lane and Dominique Ford led USD with 14 points apiece, while guard Adrian McIntyre came off the bench to score 14 points. But the Toreros drew 23 fouls and had three players finish the game with four fouls. The Dons went to the charity stripe 35 times to 18 free throw attempts for USD.
USF outscored the hosts 27-15 from the free-throw line for the game, hitting 15 of their 22 second-half tries.
UC San Diego wins
Freshman Hudson Mayes scored a career-high 24 points late Saturday to lead UC San Diego to a 72-66 Big West Conference win over UC Riverside at LionTree Arena.
The Tritons (18-9, 8-7) scored back-to-back wins for only the second time since winning three straight games from Dec. 6-16. UCR fell to 8-19 and 3-12.
UCSD closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good and outscored the Highlanders 29-11 over a span of 14 minutes, 10 seconds to build a 54-39 lead.
Mayes, a 6-foot-5 guard out of Redondo Union High in Los Angeles, downed seven of 10 field goal attempts and all nine free throws in his fifth straight start. He also had seven rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Bol Dengdit backed Mayes with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Dimitrije Yukicevic had 11 points, six rebounds and two steals in 12 minutes off the bench.
PLNU sweeps
Point Loma Nazarene University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams completed three-game sweeps in Hawaii late Saturday night to remain atop their PacWest Conference races.
The Sea Lions men (20-4, 15-3) have a three-game lead in the PacWest following wins at Chaminade (93-61), Hawaii Pacific (85-73) and Hawaii-Hilo (84-69) last week. The men have won six straight.
Andrew Hommes had 57 points, 19 rebounds and six assists over the three games, while Andrew Nagy had 47 points, 15 rebounds and six assists on the trip.
The PLNU women (19-5, 15-3) retained their half-game PacWest lead by sweeping Chaminade (73-43), Hawaii Pacific (71-53) and Hawaii-Hilo (84-53). The Sea Lions have won four straight.
Eiley Tippins had 32 points, 23 rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the three wins.
JC basketball
The San Diego City College men (21-5, 14-0) and MiraCosta College women (26-0, 10-0) are the only unbeaten teams in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play entering the final week of the regular season in the California Community College Athletic Association.
Winners of 12 straight games, the Knights have already clinched their fourth straight PCAC title and a first-round bye in the state tournament. The only remaining unbeaten women’s team in California, the fifth-ranked Spartans close their regular season at Palomar College (18-7, 9-1) Friday. MiraCosta won the first meeting 65-62 at home.
