CORONA, CA — An overturned big rig on the southbound transition from the Corona (71) Expressway to the Riverside (91) Freeway in west Corona Thursday, injured the driver and prompted a closure of the connector.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m., witnesses reported the crash where a trucker apparently lost control in the slow lane, causing the tractor-trailer to roll onto its side, coming to rest on the dirt shoulder, according to the California Highway Patrol.

No other vehicles were involved.

According to the Corona Fire Department, the trucker was able to self-extricate prior to Corona Fire Department crews reaching the location. “(The driver) suffered unspecified minor injuries and was taken to Chino Valley Medical Center for treatment, according to CHP dispatch.

A subsequent diesel spill, along with other fluids onto the 71, requiring a hazardous materials cleanup, according to reports from the scene.

Officers completely shut down the transition shortly after 11 a.m., snarling traffic through the area.

A two hour SigAlert was issued, allowing tow trucks to raise the semi-truck onto its wheels. That work was expected to conclude by 2 p.m.

There was no word on what the truck was carrying.

Drivers should seek alternative routes if at all possible during this incident.
