The Detroit Institute of Arts recently brought its In-School Program to Ferndale Upper Elementary.

Third through fifth-grade classes and the lower elementary Montessori students created their own works of art by exploring an artifact from the DIA’s collection, students bridged the gap between history and their own lives.

Working in collaborative teams, the students used mixed media to explore the concept of “community in action,” transforming their classrooms into vibrant workshops of civic imagination.

The program is currently available to elementary classrooms across Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.
