Remembering Cake’s Greg Brown

The founding guitarist of Sacramento’s homegrown rock band Cake has passed away, following a brief illness. Greg Brown was the songwriter behind the hit song “The Distance” and also mentored decades of area artists through his band Deathray and other side projects. We’ll hear more about his musical legacy from one of his former bandmates, John McCrea. We’ll also hear reflections from journalist Scott Thomas Anderson and Iowa Public Radio Music Program Director Nick Brunner.

Sac State Disability Access Center

The Sacramento State Disability Access Center (DAC) provides a wide range of academic accommodations that ensure disabled students have equal educational access. But recently, the DAC came under criticism from some disabled students, who found barriers and inconsistencies to the approval process. Last month, we had student Valdy Ngassam on the show – he created the Disability Justice Club due to his experiences. Today, we welcome the DAC to learn about the process and misconceptions for requesting academic accommodations. Dr. Mary Lee Vance is the Director of the Sacramento State Disability Access Center and Rahsaan Ellison-Johnson is the Associate Director.

You can listen to Sac State student Valdy Ngassam’s Insight segment here.

Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers

Grammy Award-winning violinist Anne Akiko Meyers is renowned for her performances of the classical canon. But the California native is also admired as a champion of today’s most important living composers, having commissioned works by Philip Glass, Arvo Part, and many others. This week Meyers will perform one of her most celebrated commissions, Fandango by Arturo Marquez, with the Modesto Symphony in two Valentine-themed concerts. CapRadio’s mid-day classical host Jennifer Reason spoke with the violinist to preview this weekend’s concerts.
