2025 season recap
San Diego FC broke records in its inaugural season.
The club won 19 matches and earned 63 points during the 34-match regular season, the most victories and points ever recorded by a new MLS expansion team.
This led to being the top seed in the 2025 MLS Western Conference playoffs.
In the playoffs, SDFC triumphed over Portland Timbers in a first-round, best-of-three series. In the conference semifinals, the club narrowly beat Minnesota United FC 1-0. The club lost in the MLS Western Conference final to the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1.
The team won its first-ever match, 2-0, against the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy on Feb. 23, 2025.
At the first home game in franchise history, SDFC came out with a 0-0 draw against St. Louis City SC at Snapdragon Stadium on March 1.
Forwards Anders Dreyer and Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano, along with midfielder and team captain Jeppe Tverskov were named to their first MLS All-Star Game on June 25.
Dreyer was also named MLS player of the month twice in 2025.

Offseason highlights
The club traded San Diego native Luca de la Torre’s rights to Charlotte FC on Dec. 30. San Diego received $50,000 in 2026 general allocation money from Charlotte. De la Torre started 26 matches and came off the bench in 11 more last season. He scored five goals and logged two assists.
San Diego FC parted ways with Mexican star Lozano after one season. Coach Mikey Varas said, “Holistically, all together, it’s not a fit.” He finished with nine goals and 10 assists in 27 appearances, 22 of them starts.
The franchise announced it agreed to a multi-year contract extension with coach Varas on Jan. 12. He led SDFC to a 19-9-6 record and a first-place finish in the MLS Western Conference standings.
On Jan. 14, the club signed Dreyer to a contract extension through the 2028-29 season with a club option for one more year.
On Jan. 22, the 19-year-old defender Luca Bombino resigned with San Diego FC with a contract extension through the 2028-2029 season with a club option for the 2029-2030 season.
The team officially released a new uniform on Feb. 10. Its “unprecedented unity” kit replaces the inaugural “community” kit, which was primarily worn during road games. The new jersey is white with splashes of orange and royal blue, a departure from last season’s road jersey, which was a navy-and-white color palette. The “upredicented unity” kit also has players wearing royal blue shorts for the first time.
