The Terminal Island Japanese Fishing Village Memorial in San Pedro
A Day of Remembrance program of prayer and origami will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Terminal Island Japanese Fishing Village Memorial, 1129 S. Seaside Ave. in San Pedro.
Nikkei Progressives, one of the co-sponsors of the event, said in a statement, “Our friends at Harbor Area Peace Patrol are holding a Day of Remembrance prayer and origami gathering on Terminal Island … As Japanese Americans whose families were incarcerated during World War II, we understand the lasting trauma that family separation and forced displacement causes.
“All are welcome to join us at this gathering. Please exercise caution as this is a known ICE staging location and agents are armed.”
The event is also sponsored by Community Self-Defense Coalition and Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice.
In February 1942, all of Terminal Island’s Issei fishermen were taken into custody and many were sent to distant detention centers. Then all residents were forced to leave their homes and businesses. Although many of them returned to Southern California after the war, the fishing village had been razed and was never re-established.
