It’s week 2 of our weekly Husky Softball roundup, and this week saw a very successful trip for Heather Tarr’s squad, as they went to California and dominated their competition!
The first outing was a series against Fresno State, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The first game saw the Huskies win 2-0, with bookended runs in the first and seventh innings, and a dominant outing for pitcher Sophia Ramuno, winning her second decision of the year. Ramuno fanned 8 while giving up 5 hits on 109 pitches, putting up a complete game shutout. The scoring started off in the bottom of the 1st, when Alexis Deboer hit a solo shot off of Bulldog pitcher Lauryn Carranco, who gave up 6 hits and walked 4 on the day. The Huskies wouldn’t score again until Deboer drove in another run, scoring the pinch runner Marley Teasley on a single up the middle. The result would then hold. Another highlight from this game is Allie Thomsen getting her first collegiate hit, a double, while pinch hitting for Teasley, so congrats to her!

The second game was a shellacking of the Bulldogs, which ended after 5 innings, as the Huskies won 9-0. The Huskies didn’t even get the ball out of the infield until a 2 run double by Ava Carroll in the top of the second, but scored 4 runs in that inning regardless. Carroll would break the game wide open in the top of the third, as after a fielder’s choice and two wild pitches brought in 3 runs, she would drive in 2 more on a single, making the game 9-0. Amira Rodriguez and Morgan Reimer combined for the shutout, and Reimer picked up her second win of the season, with Rodriguez also picking up a hit, but Rodriguez did exit the game due to injury, but according to Ed Strong, she did walk off under her own power, so it may not be as serious as first feared.
The third and final game of the series against Fresno State would be more of the same, as a 4 run fifth inning would propel the Huskies to a sweep of the Bulldogs. The Huskies scored 6 runs on 11 hits, with Ava Carroll providing another explosion of offense, driving in 4, and Morgan Reimer getting another win. Gabi Toney and Ava Carroll each went yard (with Toney’s blast coming as a pinch hitter) in the fourth inning, and Kaycie Burdick contributing an RBI triple (her first XBH of her career) to put the game away, with the Dawgs ultimately winning 6-1 and Reimer picking up her third win.
The Dawgs would continue their journey through California later in the weekend with the Silicon Valley Classic, kicking off with a game against San Jose State on Sunday morning, before a 10 mile drive to Santa Clara. The Dawgs again won 6-1, with fantastic performances from Kaycie Burdick (3-3, 2 RBI, 3 putouts) and Giselle Alvarez (2-4, 1 RBI) leading the way. The exclamation point came from Gabi Toney’s inside-the-park home run, one of five round trippers on the day, giving the Huskies the lead and the game at 6-1.
The final game of the weekend was another Husky victory, this time a 13-0 drubbing of Santa Clara. This game had a unique scoring quirk that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before:
Five different Huskies went yard (including Zuri Patterson, who hit her first career homer), and Reimer pitched a 2 hit complete game shutout as the Huskies completed their California road trip in fine fashion, winning in 6 innings!
