1. Veteran homelessness in LA increases by 2%, LAHSA data finds
Veterans experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles increased by 2%, jumping from an estimate of 2,991 in 2024 to 3,050 in 2025, officials said Tuesday.
While veteran homelessness rose in the LA region, authorities said it remains 20% lower than in 2023 when the estimate was 3,878. Homeless authorities noted that in 2024, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs permanently housed 1,854 veterans.
The VA, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, and the Los Angeles County Department of Military and Veterans Affairs released the new data Tuesday, using information from the 2025 Homeless Count and totals from a By-Name List of veterans experiencing homelessness in the region.
“This result speaks to the tireless efforts of the VA, MVA, veteran service providers, and LAHSA over the last year to bring our heroes home,” Gita O’Neill, CEO of LAHSA, said in a statement.
As voters weigh whether to support Proposition 50 — the ballot measure that could create five new congressional districts that favor Democrats — Republicans in the state’s congressional delegation are weighing their political futures.
The proposition, which would suspend the state’s current congressional maps that were drawn by an independent redistricting commission through 2030, targets five Republican seats held by Reps. Doug LaMalfa, Kevin Kiley, David Valadao, Ken Calvert and Darrell Issa.
Perhaps the only Republican that potentially benefits from the redraw if Prop 50 passes is the state’s only GOP congresswoman, Rep. Young Kim. Kim currently represents the 40th district in Orange County.
“Her current district is a lean-R district, but it becomes very, very Republican in the Prop 50 map in order to make all the surrounding districts more democratic,” said Christian Grose, a professor at the University of Southern California.
3. Gov. Newsom to sue Trump if president sends troops to San Francisco
California plans to fight back to prevent President Donald Trump from deploying the National Guard in San Francisco.
Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta stated the Golden State would sue the Trump administration immediately “if they illegally” sent the troops to the Bay Area.
“There is no basis to send National Guard troops to San Francisco,” Bonta said in a news release. “No emergency. No rebellion. No invasion. Not even unrest. President Trump has long abandoned any pretenses for the illegal federalization and deployment of California’s National Guard. He does not care about satisfying the conditions of the law; he cares about himself, and he cares about power.”
The statements arrive as Trump increases the military presence in mostly Democratic states — against the wishes of local governors and mayors. In recent weeks, he’s set his target on San Francisco.

4. Luka scores 43, but Butler’s Warriors top Lakers 119-109 in a LeBron-less season opener
Jimmy Butler scored 31 points, Stephen Curry added 23 and the Golden State Warriors overcame Luka Doncic’s 43-point performance to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 119-109 on Tuesday night in both teams’ season opener.
LeBron James missed a season opener for the first time in his 23 years in the NBA, watching from the Lakers’ bench. The top scorer in league history has sciatica that is expected to sideline him until mid-November.
Jonathan Kuminga scored 17 points while the Warriors largely shut down the Lakers apart from Doncic, who scored 40 points for the 47th time in his NBA career and the third since joining the Lakers.
Doncic added 12 rebounds and nine assists in his first season opener with the Lakers, but the Slovenian superstar was 2 of 10 on 3-point attempts as Los Angeles lost its season opener for the ninth time in 10 years.
