The Los Angeles Angels, even after trading away Taylor Ward, are going to field a very interesting outfielder for the 2026 MLB season.

While Jo Adell, Jorge Soler, and Josh Lowe currently make up the outfield, Mike Trout resides in the designated hitter spot. But, for the 2026 season, that looks poised to change.

According to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com, Trout announced to reporters that he plans on playing center field for the 2026 season. After taking time away from the position in 2025, sticking at right field and designated hitter, Trout is returning to his primary position.

Mike Trout announced position change back to CF

“Mike Trout said he wants to play center field again,” Bollinger reports. “He said he already had a good conversation with manager Kurt Suzuki about it.”

While this switch isn’t official as of yet, in the sense that Trout hasn’t cemented his status as the center fielder, it looks to be the case if Trout and the manager are in agreement on his move back to center field.

He didn’t play any center field in 2025, starting 22 games in right field and 106 at designated hitter. After just one year off from the position he’s called home, Trout is returning to center field for the 2026 season, barring any changes.

As Alden Gonzalez of ESPN noted, Trout did not like slotting in as the Angels’ designated hitter last season. He also believes playing center field will be easier on his body than playing right field.

The future Hall of Famer is coming into his 16th season, and while he had a down 2025, with a .232 batting average and .797 OPS, Trout is looking to return to center field for the 2026 campaign and continue adding to his Hall of Fame resume.

Hearing that Trout is ready to return to center field is good news for the Angels, as it means he’s in good enough shape to man the position he’s spent the majority of his career at.
