Raiders hire Oakland native RB coach out of college ranksThe Raiders continue to fill out their coaching staff. With all their coordinators in place, they have been busy bringing in position coaches. Wednesday they officially announced their new wide receivers coach Zach Azzirri and are reportedly hiring running backs coach Omar Young as well.
With the new staff in Las Vegas, they hope to uncover some talented coaches who just haven’t gotten their shot yet. Young had been an NFL assistant for a number of years with stops in New England, Chicago, Green Bay and Cleveland. But in order to get the position coach title, he had to head back to the college ranks.
Now after just one season at Iowa State, the Raiders are bringing him back to the NFL as their new running backs coach.
Young is an Oakland native, who graduated from the University of San Francisco with a master’s degree in sports management. From there he began his coaching career in junior college and got his first D-1 job in 2011 as the special teams graduate assistant at San Jose State. His first job as a running backs coach was a three-year stint at Eastern Illinois from 2019-21. After which he joined the NFL coaching ranks.
In 2022, his first year in Chicago as an offensive quality control coach, the Bears led the league in rushing (3014).
