Bakersfield police received a call about a shooting near Frank J. Fletcher Street and William F. Halsey Avenue, where officers found two people suffering from injuries.

Less than 10 minutes later, police received another call about a victim found outside Golden Valley High School.

The person found near the campus had moderate injuries and was not a student or staff member.

Still, Golden Valley High School, Oliver Middle School, and Horizon Elementary delayed releasing students until Bakersfield police cleared the area.

Police said one of the victims found near Frank J. Fletcher Street and William F. Halsey Avenue died, and investigators believe the two incidents are linked.

The shootings came after Golden Valley High School was among the schools that received online threats over the past weekend, heightening concern among families when someone was found hurt near campus.

“I’m just shaking. Was crying at work,” Fay Maestas, a mother, said after learning about a possible shooting near Golden Valley High School, where her son is a student.

Kern High School District officials said the school continued operating as usual with extra security on campus. But some students said the reports left them uneasy about returning.

“Nobody got hurt in my class, but still, making me panicky,” said Elijah Bengartner. “If the actual shooter’s out there, and I don’t really want to be out at school.”

The investigation remained active, and police said there was no suspect.
