The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting rain and even a few thunderstorms across parts of California in the coming days, along with noticeably cooler temperatures at times.

According to the NWS, temperatures will drop significantly by Wednesday, followed by dry and much warmer conditions on Thursday and Friday, before another cooling trend arrives over the weekend.

Rain in Northern California

While Los Angeles and Ventura counties are not expected to see rain, areas farther northwest – including Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, as well as higher elevations – could get light rain or isolated thunderstorms.

“Some areas may see morning drizzle from the marine layer, but there’s also a chance of one or two isolated thunderstorms, mainly north of Point Conception and in the mountains, as low pressure slowly moves through the region during the afternoon,” said the NWS. The agency added that any rain activity should taper off by late afternoon or evening.

Carol Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard, told the Los Angeles Times that interior valleys and mountain areas in the south are the most likely to experience rainfall. However, the precipitation and winds won’t be as intense as last week’s storm in Los Angeles County. She also noted a slight chance of thunderstorms, particularly in the mountain regions of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

Temperatures for the week

A notable drop in temperatures is expected Wednesday. By Thursday and Friday, temperatures should climb back into the 80s°F in the valleys and downtown Los Angeles. But by the weekend, another cool-down is on the way.

“A large upper-level trough will develop across the Pacific Northwest this weekend, pushing the offshore high eastward and bringing back a moderate onshore flow that will help lower daytime highs by 5 to 10 degrees across most areas,” the NWS said.
