Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) officials Thursday hailed quick-thinking neighbors as heroes after they broke a window and used a garden hose to douse a fire ripping its way through a woman’s apartment.
The fire was sparked at a small, four-unit apartment building on Euclid Avenue near East Fountain Street at around 3:30 a.m. Thursday. When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were engulfing one of the units.
“Heroic neighbors acted swiftly, breaking a window and using a garden hose to help extinguish the fire,” the Long Beach Fire Department said in a Facebook post Thursday. “Their quick actions helped prevent the fire from spreading.”

The LBFD said firefighters found a woman in her 40s inside the unit. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The fire did not spread to the other apartments, and no one else was hurt.
The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation. No further details were immediately released.
