OAKLAND — A 34-year-old transient was shot Wednesday night in East Oakland while he was collecting cans, authorities said.

The man was in stable condition at a hospital Thursday, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to his leg.

The shooting happened about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday in the 1800 block of 73rd Avenue, not far from International Boulevard.

The man told police he was collecting cans in the area to earn some money when he heard a loud noise and realized he had been shot. He hobbled to a nearby restaurant where police and medical personnel were called.

According to initial police reports, there was a dispute involving other people in the area where shots were fired and investigators are trying to determine if the 34-year-old man was hit by a stray bullet fired during the dispute or was an intended target.

Police have not yet determined what the dispute was about.

No other injuries were reported.
