BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Gov. Gavin Newsom is awarding $107 million in state funding to multiple cities, including Bakersfield and Delano, as part of an effort to curb gun violence.

Bakersfield will receive nearly $5 million from the California Violence Intervention and Prevention program, also known as CalVIP.

Since 2019, more than $350 million has been invested in the program. The governor’s office said recent data shows violent crime is down 12% in California’s major cities.

In Bakersfield, 2024 was the city’s safest year since before the COVID-19 pandemic, with 60% fewer shootings.

Bakersfield will receive a total of $4,899,000, and the City of Delano Police Department is set to receive $2,000,000.
