Boston College alum among 8 killed in northern California avalanche

A Boston College alumna has been identified as one of the people killed in an avalanche near Lake Tahoe in California on Tuesday.Katherine Vitt, one of the victims, graduated in 2004 with a degree in English, according to a Boston College spokesperson.Vitt was one of eight skiers killed near the Castle Peak area of the Sierra Nevada after an avalanche was reported.On Thursday, Vitt’s family released a statement with the other families of the victims, saying in part:”They were all mothers, wives and friends, all of whom connected through the love of the outdoors… We are heartbroken and are doing our best to care for one another and our families in the way we know these women would have wanted.”Six people were rescued from the mountain and one skier is still missing.
