The San Diego Seals of the National Lacrosse League have won four of their last five games. They can improve to two games above .500 for the first time this season Saturday night, when they host the Halifax Thunderbirds at Pechanga Arena.
The Seals (5-4) are coming off last weekend’s 13-7 road win over the Oshawa FireWolves. A key component to the winning stretch has been the play of goalie Chris Origlieri, who has stopped 180 of 221 shots over the five-game period and appears to be hitting a groove.
“It’s that time of the season when you separate the pretenders from the contenders, and we definitely see ourselves as contenders,” Origlieri said. “It’s flowing well, and (it’s) not just me. The defense in front of me has been excellent. And we know we can score, so it’s a good vibe right now around the whole team.”
Halifax (3-6) is coming off an 11-10 home loss to the Buffalo Bandits and has lost three straight games.
Oddly, the Seals have been better away than at home. They hold the NLL’s only undefeated road mark (4-0) while only going 1-4 at Pechanga Arena, which features one of the most raucous environments in box lacrosse.
Now in his fifth season with the Seals, Origlieri is 5-2 with a 10.59 goals-against average and a .777 save percentage.
Like the Seals, his performance has been sharper in recent games. That portends good things as the club hits the final nine-game stretch of the regular season.
The Seals are tied for fifth place in the 14-team NLL. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
“I feel we are coming together as a team,” Origlieri said. “We have had some rough moments, but we are finding a way. We are getting hot at the right time.”
Gulls hit the road
The American Hockey League’s San Diego Gulls play Friday and Saturday at Rockford before returning home to host Tucson Wednesday night.
Former Gull and current Anaheim Ducks goalie Lukas Dostal performed well for Czechia in the Olympic hockey competition, nearly leading the club to an upset of heavily favored Canada on Wednesday.
Dostal played 102 games as a Gull over the course of three seasons.
The Gulls (22-15-6-4) are coming off a 4-3 overtime shootout home loss to San Jose last weekend.
Mojo host Omaha
The San Diego Mojo (4-7) of Major League Volleyball host the Omaha Supernovas (7-5) at Viejas Arena at 4 p.m Sunday.
The Mojo are coming off Sunday’s 3-0 loss at the Indy Ignite; they suffered a five-set loss to Omaha when the teams last met on Jan. 30.
Clippers return to Oceanside
The G League’s Clippers (10-12) host the Austin Spurs (12-7) Saturday night at Frontwave Arena. The game tips off at 7 p.m.
Sockers see Stars
The San Diego Sockers (9-4-2) return to MASL action Saturday at the Tacoma Stars (7-6-1) at 6:05 p.m.
The Sockers lost 5-4 at home to the Empire Strykers on Sunday.
Locals on Frontwave fight card
El Cajon cousins Julius Ballo and Jonny Mansour will feature on an April 18 boxing card at Frontwave Arena. They’ll fight yet-to-be-named opponents.
Ballo (2-0) beat Juan Centeno in a featherweight bout via six-round unanimous decision on Dec. 13.
Mansour (6-0, 2 KOs) won a lightweight bout via unanimous decision over Marco Antonio Juarez on the same card.
