A California man was arrested Monday night in Portsmouth following a pursuit along Interstate 95.
The driver, later identified as Gongping Cheng, 39, of Monterey Park, California, is facing charges for resisting arrest and allegedly forging licenses.
State Police said Cheng’s midsize Chevrolet was observed speeding along I-95 northbound in Hampton Falls by a state trooper around 9:30 p.m. on Monday.
The trooper attempted to pull Cheng over, but he did not stop and continued speeding at nearly 100 mph into Portsmouth, according to a news release.
Other troopers further north on I-95 deployed tire deflation devices near Exit 3. The trap punctured one of the vehicle’s tires and caused Cheng to roll to a stop.
According to the news release, Cheng put up a brief struggle before being taken into custody. The news release says Cheng had “several fake driver’s licenses from several different states with numerous false identities.”
Cheng was charged with four felony counts of forgery, 16 misdemeanor counts of driver’s license prohibitions and additional misdemeanor counts of disobeying an officer, reckless conduct, resisting arrest or detention, as well as a violation of reckless operation.
The incident is still under investigation, and State Police ask anyone with information to contact patrick.r.vetter@dos.nh.gov.
