A Marine infantryman died Jan. 30 at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, Calif., a Marine spokesman said Thursday.
Cpl. Jayger A. Nealy, 22, of Bellevue, Wash., died in what the Marines said was a non-training incident.
“To preserve the integrity of the investigation, no additional details are available at this time,” said Lt Col. Alex Lim, a spokesman for the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Nealy served as a rifleman in 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He joined the Marine Corps in October 2022.
The base in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains “is home to the Marine Corps’ only mountain and cold weather training center in complex terrain,” according to the installation’s website.
The center trains Marines to operate in inclement weather, utilizing both formal schools and unit training programs, according to the Marines.
