PEORIA, Ariz. — The Seattle Mariners beat the Padres 7-4 in Friday’s spring training opener for both teams at Peoria Stadium.

Batter’s box: Homers by Romeo Sanabria and Jose Miranda accounted for the Padres’ first three runs. … Sanabria, a first baseman who spent last season in Double-A, homered in the sixth inning off Troy Taylor, who has made 29 appearances in the major leagues over the past two seasons. … Miranda, a corner infielder who spent the past four seasons with the Twins and is a non-roster invitee to camp, hit a two-run homer off minor-leaguer Alex Hoppe in the seventh. Miranda also doubled in the ninth. … Singles by Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth were the only hits by players on the Padres’ 40-man roster. … Nick Castellanos was 0-for-1 with a walk in his first game in a Padres uniform. … Ty France, in camp on a minor-league deal, was 1-for-2.

Balls and strikes: Left-hander Jagger Haynes, the Padres’ sixth-ranked pitching prospect (11th overall), started and allowed two second-inning runs. The runs came on a two-run homer by Michael Arroyo one batter after left fielder Nick Schnell lost a routine fly ball in the sun on what would have been the third out. Haynes, who spent last season in Double-A, allowed singles to Luke Raley and Julio Rodriguez but retired Cal Raleigh on a fly ball and escaped the first inning by getting Josh Naylor to ground into a double play. … Justin Yeager, in camp after signing as a minor-league free agent, allowed a run on two bloop singles and a stolen base in the third inning. … Wandy Peralta and Mason Miller worked a scoreless inning apiece. Miller, who hit at least 100 mph on nine of his 11 fastballs, and topped out at 101.7 mph, struck out two of the four batters he faced. … The Mariners scored two runs off Jackson Wolf in the seventh inning and two charged to Manuel Castro in the eighth.

Extra bases: It was a good day for catcher Luis Campusano challenging ball calls via the ABS system, which will be used in regular-season games this season. Campusano got Haynes a strike in the second inning and Yeager a third strike against Raleigh in the third. Both were on pitches that nicked the bottom of the zone. … Castellanos, playing first base for the first time as a professional, made a diving stop on a grounder for an out in the fourth inning. … Bogaerts’ single leading off the game was a dribbler up the middle. His 247 career infield hits are third-most among active players (Jose Altuve 370, Starling Marte 282).
