SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Two people were killed in separate incidents Friday morning at Heavenly Lake Tahoe, the latest in a line of skiing-related deaths in the region, authorities said.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the incidents happened just before noon, but did not specify a possible cause of death for either person. Heavenly Ski Patrol members transported the two people to the base area of the resort from unspecified areas, the sheriff’s office said.
Ski patrol members and Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the people were pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office said their identities will be released following notification of next of kin.
The incidents were not connected, and there is no known relationship between the two people, according to the sheriff’s office.
No other details were released Friday.
“This remains an active investigation,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.
The deaths follow three others this month at Northstar California Resort in Truckee. On Thursday, search and rescue teams found 21-year-old Colin Kang — a Fremont resident, San Jose State University graduate and resort employee — dead on a ski run.
Skiing accidents at Northstar also claimed the lives of Stuart McLaughlin, 53, of Hillsborough, on Feb. 15, and Nicholas Kenworthy, 26, of Los Angeles, on Feb. 6.
Elsewhere, at least eight backcountry skiers were killed in a powerful avalanche near Castle Peak; a ninth person is missing and presumed dead. Six have been identified by their families as Carrie Atkin, Liz Clabaugh, Danielle Keatley, Kate Morse, Caroline Sekar and Kate Vitt.
