The Rockvale and Oakland girls’ basketball teams will play for titles next week in the District 10-4A tournament at Siegel.
Rockvale’s girls survived Riverdale 46-38, while the Oakland girls defeated Siegel 58-22.
In 9-4A, La Vergne and Smyrna girls will tip at 6 p.m. for third place, and Blackman and Stewarts Creek will play at 7:30 p.m. Monday for the title.
The Rockvale girls jumped to a 10-point halftime lead behind foul shooting and solid defense. Riverdale made a run in the second half, cutting it to six, four and then one point with two minutes to go. However, Rockvale made enough plays and hit free throws to win.
There were 35 fouls called in the game – 13 in the first half and 22 in the second half. Riverdale was whistled 24 times while Rockvale only had the whistle blown 11.
Three players scored in double figures for the Rockets. Caydence Thomas had 15, Zaniiya Tiller 14 and Amaya Nash 13.
“We stepped up and made plays,” Rockvale coach Perry Lyons said. “When we can get three to four scoring in double figures, we’re tough to beat. We have been battle tested and put in situations for these moments.” said.
“Their defense got us out of rhythm but with the talent in our league we can be a dangerous four seed,” Riverdale coach Joshua Bugg said.
