UCLA softball started Saturday with a commanding 11-0 performance against Fresno State at Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, Calif.
Redshirt junior pitcher Sydney Somerndike was the only Bruin pitcher to step on the mound. She flustered the Bulldogs the entire game.
Fresno State’s lone hit came in the top of the first, but was followed by a double play that forced the end of the inning. UCLA had much better luck in the bottom of the first with redshirt junior infielder Ramsey Suarez hitting a grand slam to put the Bruins up 4-0.
UCLA scored two more runs in the bottom of the second. The Bruins later piled on five runs in the bottom of the fourth with senior infielder Jordan Woolery and freshman infielder Bri Alejandre both hitting home runs. The game ended in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.
Woolery, sophomore infielder Kaniya Bragg and sophomore utility Mia Phillips lead UCLA in runs with two each.
