PEORIA, Ariz. — The Dodgers beat the Padres 5-1 on Sunday at Peoria Stadium.
Batter’s box: Fernando Tatis Jr. singled to right field in both of his at-bats and Manny Machado walked. That was the entirety of the offense by any of the nine players who appeared in Sunday’s game and are virtually assured of being on the Padres’ opening day roster. … Sung-Mun Song made his Padres debut, hitting for Machado and replacing him at third base. Song, who signed a four-year, $15 million contract in December, struck out in his first at-bat and lined out his second time up. … Outfielder Carlos Rodríguez, who spent almost all last season playing for the Braves’ Triple-A team, doubled and is 3-for-4 in two games this spring. … Nick Solak, an outfielder who has hit .250/.324/.369 in 985 major league plate appearances and is in camp on a minor league deal, doubled and is 3-for-5 with a walk this spring.
Balls and strikes: Randy Vásquez’s fastball sizzled as he worked two scoreless innings at the start. Vásquez, who is almost assured of being in the rotation after making 46 starts over the past two seasons, allowed a single and walked one batter while averaging 96.6 mph on his four-seam fastball. That was more than 5 mph faster than his average fastball velocity in his spring debut last year. … Triston McKenzie, who has made 80 MLB starts and is in camp as a non-roster invitee, allowed two hits, walked two batters and was charged with four runs while getting two outs in the third inning in his Padres spring debut. … Left-hander Kyle Hart, who is considered a long relief option, worked two scoreless innings. … Ty Adcock, who signed a one-year, $850,000 contract as a free agent, allowed a run on three hits in first appearance of the spring.
Extra bases: Catcher Will Smith and right fielder Kyle Tucker were the only projected regulars to play for the Dodgers. … Left-hander Jackson Ferris, the organization’s top pitching prospect, started for the Dodgers. Of the Dodgers’ nine pitchers Sunday, three had major league experience. And those three (Will Klein, Garrett McDaniels and Carlos Duran) have pitched a total of 32⅔ innings in the big leagues.
On deck: Left-hander JP Sears, who is vying for the one or two available spots in the rotation, will start against the Brewers, 12:10 p.m. PT Monday in Peoria, Ariz.
