GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On Saturday, the Oakland women’s tennis team was down a player, forcing the Golden Grizzlies to concede two default wins to Davenport and resulting in a 4-3 loss.
Freshman Oliwia Klimas did not compete in the match, leaving Oakland (2-7) to forfeit one doubles match and one singles match to Davenport (5-1). The Golden Grizzlies needed to win the two remaining doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Juniors Edie Hammond and Emilia Jarvinen did their part on the No. 1 court with a 6-4 victory, but senior Tara Montreuil and sophomore Martyna Piechowicz came up short on the No. 2 court, playing there for the first time this season.
That gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead, which quickly increased to 2-0 with Oakland having only five players available for singles. From there, the Golden Grizzlies needed to win four of the five remaining singles matches to take the overall match.
With Klimas absent, Oakland’s No. 4-6 players all moved up one position, facing tougher opponents than usual. The adjustment did not seem to faze them, as both Jarvinen (5-7, 6-1, 6-2) and Montreuil (6-4, 6-3) earned wins on their respective courts.
Sophomore Nisa Bulut also picked up a victory on the No. 2 court, closing out a 6-3, 7-5 win. However, Oakland would take only three singles matches, giving Davenport two singles victories and the overall 4-3 result.
Despite the two default wins awarded to the Panthers, Oakland battled throughout and kept the match a challenge, with the result coming down to the final courts.
