The Lake Tahoe community held a vigil Sunday for the nine skiers who died in the Sierra’s deadliest avalanche ever on Tuesday.

Crews finished recovering the bodies yesterday, but the healing process is just beginning for so many people who knew the victims, many of whom were from Marin County.

People will meet at a church after the candlelight vigil.

Organizers also sked everyone who came tonight to bring a candle or a bright light to remember the bright lights that burned within these nine back country skiers.

The town of Truckee announced the vigil and support services a few days ago in response to this deadly and traumatic tragedy. The town expressed its sorrow for all the victims, which were sentiments shared by speakers as this vigil gets underway.

There are several community-wide ceremonies and services and support groups later this week. Hours before the ceremony began, the community erected a tribute to the nine skiers: one heart for each life lost and an invitation for the community to share messages of love on each heart.

The speakers also expressed their appreciation for volunteers and first responders who helped in the recovery in dangerous and traumatic conditions.
