As spring draws closer, California wildflowers are slowly starting to bloom. One not-so-secret hidden valley in Big Sur is starting to come alive with hundreds of beautiful calla lilies. The small valley, aptly named Calla Lily Valley at Garrapata Beach, is tucked just off Highway 1. A small trail along the bluffs will lead you down into the valley, with a stream surrounded by the calla lilies leading out to the ocean.

If you can manage to catch them in bloom between January and April, it’s definitely worth the trip. The valley leads out to the secluded Garrapata Beach, perfect for quietly taking in the dramatic ocean views. Even if you can’t make it during calla lily season, the valley is a beautiful pocket of the coast, and worth exploring regardless of the season.

Calla Lily Valley is easily accessible via a short trail down to the beach. The loop is less than a mile long and has very little elevation, making it ideal for a short walk to stretch your legs. While the trail is generally considered easy, it involves some stairs. Plus, we recommend checking weather conditions and potential road closures before heading out.

The valley is just off Highway 1, which is finally fully open for the first time in three years. While Big Sur boasts one of the most beautiful and popular coastlines in California, the winding highway is often troubled with landslides, leading to closures. Now, after many repairs, the entire stretch of Big Sur is open, just in time for spring.

While you’re exploring Big Sur, we recommend stopping by Nepenthe, a historic restaurant perched on the bluffs above the water with incredible views of the coast. Plus, you can explore Carmel up the coast, a whimsical coastal town known for its fairytale cottages.
