SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The FBI has joined the search for a 9-year-old girl missing from Santa Barbara County.
The most recent photo of Melodee Buzzard provided to investigators is 2 years old. She is a 9-year-old girl, approximately 4’6″ and 60 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Investigators say her appearance may have changed since the time the photo was taken.

Detectives say Melodee, who was being home-schooled, has not checked in with her independent studies program since October of last year.
Evidence points to Melodee being with her mom, Ashlee Buzzard, as recently as Oct. 7, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday.
They believe she was with her mother on a road trip that took them as far as Nebraska. Authorities said they believe Ashlee Buzzard was driving a rented white Chevrolet Malibu with the license plate 9MNG101.
Investigators say her mother remains uncooperative and hasn’t given authorities any information about Melodee’s whereabouts.

Authorities announced last week they were looking for Melodee, initially saying she hadn’t been seen since October 2024. The department later said she had been spotted as recently as August 2025, and a sheriff’s spokesperson described her disappearance as “suspicious.” It appears Melodee was homeschooled for at least the last few years, according to the sheriff’s office.
