Del Mar Community Connections (DMCC) recently announced Randee Warren as February Volunteer of the Month because she is a veritable hero at DMCC’s large community gatherings. Warren is a member of DMCC’s Social Good Times committee, the team that plans and staffs the large community parties like the Cookies and Cocoa Holiday Party, the Flu Clinic, the Spring Ice Cream Social, and the Champagne and Chocolate Open House, according to a news release.

Warren is the type of volunteer who figures out what is most needed at any given moment and accomplishes the task. Warren was nominated by board member and Social Good Times Chair Ann Feeney who said in the news release, “Randee Warren always volunteers to go shopping and bring supplies to our events, and she is always a big help at the events. We especially appreciate her volunteering to make the hot cocoa at Cookies and Cocoa!”

Warren grew up in Los Angeles and moved to San Diego when she attended San Diego State University. She launched her career as a probation officer working with juveniles, but after embarking on a Latin American backpacking trip with her husband Glenn, she was inspired to work as a travel agent with Global Travel. They decided to call Del Mar home, purchasing a “run-down beach house because it was one of the only houses we could afford!”

In the mid-1990s her husband Glenn changed careers, leaving criminal defense law, when he became a diplomat for the foreign service. The Warrens lived the next 16 years all over the globe: the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Ecuador, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. Warren also found fulfilling work at the various embassies. “My favorite job, in Zimbabwe, was to work with the ambassador to select and coordinate small development (self-help) projects in villages throughout the country,” Warren said in the news release.

Service to others is inherent to the values of the Warren family. They raised their son Scott all over the world. He’s now married to Caitlin and living in Washington, DC while raising their baby granddaughter Naomi. Scott works as a fellow at the Agora Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where he is involved with democracy and civic engagement programs.

In addition to her volunteer work for DMCC, Warren is a Casa de Amistad tutor for underprivileged elementary students in Solana Beach.

“I have always enjoyed working with and getting to know people, both adults and children,” Warren said in the news release.  Discussing her volunteer work with DMCC, Warren said, “It’s a way to get to know many of our community’s dedicated volunteers and the wonderful Del Mar residents who attend DMCC events.”

Del Mar Community Connections is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to support and serve the older adult population of Del Mar as they age independently at home.
