PRESS-TELEGRAM FOOTBALL TOP 10

1. St. John Bosco (7-0)

The area’s and the nation’s No. 1 team improved to 2-0 in the Trinity League after a dominant 48-0 victory over Orange Lutheran. The Braves were led by sophomore quarterback Koa Malau’ulu, who completed 17 of 21 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns. St. John Bosco will play a third straight Trinity League road game, this time at Santa Margarita Friday, who beat Mater Dei 7-6 last week. This week’s Trinity League showdown will put Bosco’s high-scoring offense up against Santa Margarita’s staunch defense. The winner will have sole possession of first place in the league standings.

2. Los Alamitos (7-0)

The undefeated Griffins are coming off a two-week break. According to HSRatings, Los Alamitos is on track to earn a spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs but that will ultimately depend of how they fare in Alpha League play. They will begin a three-game league schedule against rival Edison at SoFi Stadium Thursday.

3. Downey (6-1)

The Vikings are 2-0 in the Gateway League after a dominant 67-7 victory over La Mirada. Senior quarterback Oscar Rios, who is committed to Arizona, completed 8 of 12 passes 176 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in limited playing time. Rios’ backup, freshman quarterback Chase Watkins, completed 4 of 4 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns. Junior receiver/defensive back Damani Porras had four touchdowns, including three touchdown catches and a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown. Downey is on track to earn a spot in the Division 2 playoffs for the second straight season.

4. Long Beach Poly (4-3)

The Jackrabbits are 3-0 in the Moore League after an emotional 24-22 victory over Millikan, last season’s Moore League champions. Senior Legend Galeai, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound defensive lineman, filled in admirably at quarterback for Poly, completing 11 of 14 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown. However, it was Cal safety commit Deon Jackson’s pass break on a late two-point conversion attempt that sealed the win. Poly must take rival Wilson seriously if they want to win this season’s defacto Moore League title game.

5. Long Beach Wilson (6-1)

The Bruins are 3-0 in the Moore League after a 42-0 victory over Cabrillo. Senior quarterback Mack Cooper (Prairie View A&M commit) completed 6 of 11 passes for 278 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Senior receiver Thomas Jones had two touchdown catches. Wilson’s annual rivalry game against Long Beach Poly on Friday will be for first place in the Moore League.

6. Lakewood (5-3)

The Lancers rise two spots to No. 6 in this week’s rankings after a dominant 33-2 victory over Long Beach Jordan. Senior quarterback Kade Casillas (Wayne State commit) had 265 yards of total offense and four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing). Lakewood is 3-1 in the Moore League and a win over Millikan in the Hamilton Trophy game would all but clinch one of the league’s three automatic playoff berths.

7. St. Pius X-St. Matthias (3-4)

The Warriors drop to No. 7 in this week’s rankings after a 38-28 loss to Paraclete. St. Pius senior running back Francisco Meza Jr. was a bright spot with 101 yards rushing and two touchdowns on eight carries. St. Pius is 1-1 in the Angelus League and will look to bounce back against rival St. Paul Friday.

8. Millikan (2-6)*

The Rams dropped to No. 8 in this week’s rankings after a 24-22 loss against Long Beach Poly. Millikan scored the final 19 points in the game but that was not enough to pull off a come-from-behind win. The Rams are 2-2 in the Moore League and must win their last two games against Lakewood and Compton to earn an automatic playoff berth.

9. Warren (2-5)

The Bears are 2-0 in the Gateway League after a 26-3 victory over Dominguez. Junior quarterback Jordan Malikin completed 17 of 31 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns in Warren’s win.

10. Norwalk (7-0)

The Lancers are 2-0 in the Mid-Cities League after a a 70-0 victory over Compton Early College, setting up this week’s showdown for first place in the league standings against rival Gahr.
