Two area women who are leaders in their communities have been honored for their contributions to the public good.

Gabriela Mafi, superintendent of the Garden Grove Unified School District, was named the 2026 Woman of the Year for the California State Assembly District by Assemblyman Tri Ta (R-Westminster).

“This recognition reflects the strong partnership between our schools, families, community members, and elected leaders who are united in supporting our communities and ensuring student success” said Mafi.

“I am grateful to Assemblyman Ta for this honor, proud of our district consistently beating the state and county averages on all achievement measures, and I look forward to continuing our work together in the years to come on behalf of the students and families we serve.”

She was recognized, in part, for her leadership role in the continuing improvement in student achievement the GGUSD, now celebrating its 60th year.

Christine Cordon, city manager of Westminster, was honored on Feb. 12 with the 2025 Ethical Hero Award by the California Affiliate of the International City/County Management Association.

“We are grateful for Christine’s strong leadership and commitment to our diverse city,” said Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen. “Every day, she lives her values and carries out her duties with integrity, collaboration, and transparency. Christine has worked hard to ensure that all elected officials and staff members understand their roles and work together to best serve the community. We feel lucky to have her here in Westminster.”

Cordon succeeded a series of short-term city managers in Westminster, a community with a divided and contentious city council. She resisted political pressure to shape city policies to partisan goals, even in face of an unsuccessful effort to oust her from her job. She ascended to the top administrative post in the city after serving as city clerk.
