Sacramento Republic FC has a new president and general manager following the departure of Todd Dunivant.

The club tapped former USL President and longtime soccer executive Tim Holt to oversee the club’s soccer and business operations, as well as construction of its new stadium in Sacramento’s downtown Railyards, which is expected to open next year.

“Tim brings proven leadership, integrity, and a deep understanding of what it takes to build a successful club in this league,” Republic FC managing partner Kevin Nagle said in a statement. “He has seen the USL from the league office and from the club side, and that perspective is invaluable. We believe Tim is the right leader to help guide Republic FC into its next chapter and continue building something community can be proud of.”

Holt joins Sacramento after eight years as managing director of San Antonio FC, which won the USL Championship in 2022 after finishing atop the Western Conference during the regular season. Before that, he spent 10 months with Orlando City SC during its MLS expansion season in 2015 as vice president of development. He previously served 16 years as a USL executive, including as league president from 2009 to 2015.

As league president, Holt oversaw Republic FC’s expansion award in 2012 and worked closely with Nagle.

“Republic FC is one of the special clubs in American soccer and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help steward the club into its next era,” Holt said in a statement. “Over a decade ago, Sacramento joined the USL during my tenure as league president, and it’s a full-circle moment to see how the original promise of a club has evolved into a remarkable organization with passionate supporters, consistently competing at the top of the table, and a dedicated staff who serve the community.”

Holt will officially take over in March, ahead of the regular-season opener against FC Tulsa on March 7 at Heart Health Park at Cal Expo. Head coach Neill Collins has overseen roster decisions since Dunivant’s departure.

Holt replaces Dunivant, who accepted the sporting director role with New York City FC of MLS in December after playing a key role in securing Republic FC’s new stadium near downtown Sacramento. Dunivant helped facilitate Wilton Rancheria’s controlling interest in the club to help fund the stadium and worked with Sacramento officials to approve the project, which broke ground last summer.

Holt joined Sacramento as the franchise sought to raise its profile with its new $175 million stadium in the Railyards. Republic FC has long had its sights on joining MLS, with ownership continuing to push for more investment. The new venue is designed to expand from 12,000 seats to upwards of 20,000 to comply with MLS standards.

Sacramento also remained in contention for the new USL Premier league, planned to launch in 2028. The league is designed to compete directly with MLS, with similar player payrolls and stadium sizes. USL Premier will sit atop USL’s three-tier system, alongside the USL Championship (Division II) and USL League One (Division III), making the USL the country’s first professional sports league to feature promotion and relegation. The USL announced last month that Tony Scholes, chief football officer of the English Premier League, will become USL Premier’s president this summer.

In the meantime, Republic FC continued its pursuit of a second USL Championship title after winning its inaugural season in 2014. The club finished in the top five of the Western Conference in each of the past four years, including first in 2023, but has not advanced beyond the semifinals despite ranking among league leaders in player spending and attendance.

Republic FC made a splash signing last week by signing former MLS All-Star and Canadian national team midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye after a first-round playoff exit last fall.
