San Francisco was the epicenter for all things hippy, and free-love at a time. But as the tech industry starts to grow, it often feels as though these spaces, little glimpses of color and joy, are few and far between. But, luckily, just a drive over the Golden Gate Bridge is a whimsical little haven, that was the birthplace and inspiration behind one of the most famous songs of our time.

Sausalito is the hub for California’s most vibrant, and bohemian floating home community, some dating back to the 40s and 50s. Each home shaped by the vision of its residents, the space itself a true reflection of individuality. So, it was here that the King of Soul, Otis Redding, tucked himself away and wrote the hit “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay).” Concerts happening right here in SF pay tribute to the genre—and to all the great artists, like Redding, who made it so profound.

In the height of his fame, Redding was offered some respite away from fans from a friend. A stay on his houseboat at Waldo Point Harbor in Sausalito. It was here, Redding began to write the lines, “Sittin’ in the morning sun, I’ll be sittin’ when the evening comes”.

The song he intended to echo the setting around him—seagulls, waves, and even the whistle of someone passing time—directly inspired by the sounds he heard there. He recorded it for the final time just three days before the tragic plane crash, leaving his co-producer to finish and release it. Another famous band moved by the creative energy of this special haven was Fleetwood Mac, who recorded their iconic Rumors album in a Sausalito studio.
