The city of Lansing is preparing to commemorate the occasion with a doozy — the complete shutdown of one of the state capital’s busiest thoroughfares.
Where the Closure Will Happen
Oakland Avenue is among Lansing’s most heavily traveled routes, with three lanes of one-way traffic heading westbound across the northern side of the city. Beginning March 2, Oakland Avenue will be completely shut down between Cedar Street and Walnut Avenue for construction.
What Construction Work Is Planned
It’s part of a project that will include the installation of new sewers, a water main, pavement, curbs, sidewalk ramps and other utilities in the area. It’s expected to take until mid-summer to complete, with an estimated re-opening date of July 25.
Detour Routes to Know
Detours will be posted directing traffic around the shutdown. Westbound traffic on Oakland will be routed south at Cedar Street, all the way down to the ramp to I-496 West. Detoured traffic will then head west on St. Joseph Street to its intersection with N. Martin Luther King Boulevard. From there, traffic will be directed north back to Oakland Avenue.

Motorists who regularly travel Cedar Street, St. Joseph Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard should expect higher traffic volume during the construction period, but other thoroughfares will likely feel the effects of the construction shutdown as well. Shiawassee Street, Kalamazoo Street and César E. Chávez Avenue will also likely see increased traffic.
