MESA, Ariz. — The Chicago Cubs beat the Padres 6-5 on Tuesday at Sloan Park.

Batter’s box:  Nick Castellanos drove the 11th pitch he saw in the fourth inning off the wall in center field for a two-run double. He singled in his first at-bat. … Bryce Johnson beat out a slow roller to the left side for a single in the first inning, grounded a ball through the middle for a single in the third inning and walked in the fourth. Johnson, who has played 102 games for the Padres over the past two seasons, is 3-for-8 with a walk in three spring games. … Sung-Mun Song’s first start came against a left-hander, which the Padres likely will not ask him to face too often  at the start of his career. Song struck out against Cubs starter Shota Imanaga and walked and grounded out against two right-handers. … Outfielder Tirso Ornelas, who made his MLB debut last season and is almost certainly going to start another season in Triple-A, was 1-for-2. … Outfielder Nick Schnell launched a first-pitch curveball from minor-leaguer Grant Kipp over the right field wall with two outs in the ninth inning. Schnell, a former first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays, split the past two seasons between Double-A and Triple-A. The homer was Schnell’s first hit in seven spring at-bats. … Jose Miranda was 1-for-2 and leads the Padres with a .667 average (6-for-9) and .729 on-base percentage through four spring games.

Balls and strikes: Marco Gonzales allowed three runs in 1⅔ innings in his first start since August 2024 flexor tendon surgery. The 34-year-old left-hander, in camp as a non-roster invitee, had his first pitch hit off the center field wall by Michael Busch and surrendered two singles in the first inning and allowed two more singles and two hit batters in the second. …  Ron Marinaccio took over with two on and two out in the second and got the next four outs. Marinaccio, who will leave this weekend to pitch for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic, has retired all seven batters he has faced this spring. … Hard-throwing 22-year-old right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez struck out two of the three batters he faced in his second scoreless inning of the spring. … Left-hander Jackson Wolf rebounded from a rough spring debut to retire the four batters he faced in order. Wolf, who in 2023 went five innings and got the victory in his only MLB start, entered Tuesday’s game with a runner on second base.

Extra bases: Johnson and Miguel Andujar executed a double steal in the first inning. … The Padres are 2-3 this spring.
