NORTHSTATE, Calif. — Northern California will have a strong presence at the state wrestling championships in Bakersfield this week, with 42 student-athletes from the Northern Section qualifying for the trip.
The wrestlers earned their spots at the Northern Section tournament held over the weekend at Shasta High School, where competitors from more than 40 schools took to the mats. The top two finishers in each weight class qualified for the state meet.
In all, 20 boys and 22 girls will represent the Northern Section at Dignity Health Arena in Bakersfield from Thursday, Feb. 26, through Saturday, Feb. 28.
Shasta High will send four boys and two girls to the state tournament. Durham qualified three boys and four girls, and Red Bluff is advancing three boys and two girls. Anderson will send two boys and one girl.
Chico High has one boy and six girls moving on. University Prep and Orland each qualified one boy and one girl. Corning qualified one boy and two girls. West Valley is sending two boys, while Pleasant Valley and Shasta Charter Academy each have one boy advancing.
On the girls’ side, Modoc, Fall River and Enterprise will each be represented by one wrestler.
